Web 2.0 Challenge: Thing 18: Web Apps
OK, maybe it's me but I still find Google Docs and similar services like Zoho to be limited in the amount of customization that they allow. Unlike with MS Office, there are no features comparable to "word art," "drawing tools," and "drawing objects," etc. Also, they don't offer much of a selection of fonts. Microsoft clip art is not recognized when you try to insert it and no other clip art is provided for use. It's hard to chose a "Wingding" to add until you figure out to right click to see the selection available. Furthermore, Google Docs does not accept uploads in .pdf format (at least not from me).
However, this doesn't mean that I don't use Google Docs. Actually I've had my own account for a few weeks. I started it so that I could store scanned documents to be linked to my blog. When I scanned documents directly as blog posts, they showed up too small to read. I tried to solve the problem by linking the tiny version (made it an icon) to the same document in Google Docs. Although the view from Google Docs automatically zooms in too much, one can print it out in normal print view. So that is why I originally started using Google Docs.
Eventually, I'm sure to find myself collaborating on a report with an OCL system committee using this web app. However, I see this as something I am more likely to use outside of the library for working on joint projects with people that live far from me. At work I'm most likely to use this for typing small documents that I will need my supervisor to approve before sending to a final destination. She would be able to make her changes directly onto the document. Currently, I attach a word file to an email. My supervisor sends me another email describing changes for me to make. In cases where she initiated a document for me to complete, it was necessary previously for me to download the attachment and save it under a different name so that we didn't incur problems at either end with multiple versions of the same file. Using a service like Google Docs has the potential to make even small tasks like these a little less complicated.
I did run into another problem with the two documents that I posted to my blog under the heading "2007 Tax Changes That Will Effect Pet Owners." All sorts of people that I've never met before are asking to share ownership. I'm feeling rather uncomfortable about this for a variety of reasons. I think I will solve the problem gracefully by adding a note to the blog entry asking people to print from the link only and not to request shared ownership...Advice from the Web 2.0 Committee will be accepted concerning this matter if anyone feels like offering it.
Update: I was looking over my colleague's shoulder while she was working on this step. She was checking out PeerTrainer. This also looked interesting. Since sitting at the computer as much as I have been to work on the challenge I'm going to need this...
