Web 2.0 Challenge: Thing 12: NetLibrary and WorldCat
Part I: NetLibrary. Like most OCL Reference Providers, I have been assisting customers with setting up accounts from within the library for several years. Therefore, setting up my own account was super easy and took not longer than a minute....Since the state and OCL first began subscribing to this service, I have noticed that its use has picked up, particularly by college students. I must confess that it is only recently that I have become open to reading ebooks, myself. The only problem I had was that on my first attempt, the title I chose to look at did not want to load in a timely manner (10 minutes or so and it was still thinking) so I tried something else later. For my first attempt, I did a keyword search for "carillon." It turned up several items, one of which was relevant to what I had in mind (a musical instrument), judging from the blurb that was presented with the title: The Hutchinson Concise Dictionary of Music. My second search was an advanced search which didn't work that well experimenting with various combinations of subject headings and key words to locate a book about Internet jobs. I finally gave up on the Boolean search and typed in computers as a keyword and found some titles on ebusinesses like: 101 Internet Businesses You Can Start From Home: How to Choose and Build Your Own Successful E-business 2Nd Ed. by Susan Sweeney.
Part II: WorldCat. Besides using it to verify ILL data (for which it's been extremely helpful in addition to Amazon and B&N), WorldCat has helped me in my own research. When I can't/don't want to wait for an ILL, I sometimes look up holdings for items then head for the nearest library to which I can gain admittance and to which I am willing to drive. Probably others use it for this purpose although no one has mentioned it to me so far.
