Alice Does Valley Forge and Then Does Battle with King Crab!
When Derrick asked me to make a day trip with him to the Valley Forge Historical Park in King of Prussia, PA I jumped at the chance. I like historical outings plus the leaves are starting to turn color, and I liked the idea of getting some exercise...My reason for going there had nothing to do with wanting to see the bell tower at the Washington Memorial Chapel....Oh no, of course not!
Well, I did get plenty of exercise! By the time I dragged myself up the hill to where the Washington Memorial Chapel stands, we had logged about 5 miles. I was wearing my MBT exercise sneakers that are supposed to make one's legs skinny and strong like those belonging to members of an indigenous people that don't wear shoes....It works because walking in them is twice as hard as normal. Also, I was trying to keep up with Derrick who moves like the Road Runner.
I did get to see the church and hear the carillon as there were 2 weddings going on there today. Architecturally, the building was impressive. Some of the woodwork and stained glass reminded me of the Canterbury Cathedral in England (on a much smaller scale). We had lunch at the Cabin Shop which is a souvenir shop/cafe run by volunteers from the church's congregation. As soon as we entered I noticed someone that looked familiar. It was the resident carillonneur who's picture I have seen on the Internet....The first thing I did while Derrick was getting our lunch was to ask the gentleman if he was the carillonneur. As all of my friends know, I am the queen of inarticulation. Suddenly I regressed- forgetting how to pronounce the word, "carillon" while trying to say that I am a fan of the instrument. My next few sentences were not much better. All I could come up with to say was that I know his predecessor. Then I dropped the names of every carillonneur that I've ever met (all 3 of them). Oh well, I'm looking on the bright side....99.999% of the population have never met any carillonneurs. I'm pretty unique to have met 4 of them.
Tomorrow I will try to get my pictures online from Valley Forge plus the pictures Jan sent me from Pittsburgh Ren Fest. I took most of them with her camera but didn't know that I succeeded because her camera seemed to die on every attempt I made to take a picture of Jan with FDP, prompting FDP to go into his Ralph Kramden immitation yelling at Alice (in this case me). The pictures came out really interesting. I can't wait to post them....Speaking of pictures, FDP, and cameras not working, when we were at Washington Memorial Chapel today, Derrick pointed out something that I thought was hysterically funny: a sign over a parking space indicating that the space was reserved for the carillonneur. I attempted to take a picture of the sign to email to FDP. However, that is when the batteries in my camera decided to die.....
From the last paragraph, can you tell that I miss CIB and the DellaPennas? They are currently offline and traveling in other parts of the country sharing the beauty of the carillon with people in those places. Jan's pictures and my little adventure at Frank's first carillon made me think of them a lot the last couple of days. I hope I hear from them soon.
One more topic for now: dinner. After our trip to Valley Forge we went out to eat. They tasted good but what is the point of eating crab legs? It would have been less work to go home and cook! Also, I haven't been this messy eating since I was a toddler. However, my technique for cracking the shells has slightly improved over the one and only other time that I ordered crab legs in a restaurant. That was in a Red Lobster in Pittsburgh about 13 years ago. i shot one of my crab legs off the table and into the aisle while trying to crack the shell. it just missed landing on another occupied table...
On this note I am going to bed.
